Donjoy OA Adjuster Knee Brace for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, affects the knee more than any other joint, usually the medial (inner) side of the knee., The OAdjuster brace is designed for moderate to severe uni-compartmental (on one side of the knee) osteoarthritis, ligament instability, and rehabilitation after knee surgery. It effectively offloads pressure on the damaged knee compartment, enabling wearers to return to normal activity.
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery reported that a study proved that the OAdjuster is one of only two braces to actually achieve the offloading that many brace manufacturers claim for their products. The Arthritis Foundation awarded it a Commendation for ease of use. The OAdjuster will not cure osteoarthritis. It helps treat it by redistributing the weight load placed on the knees away from the damaged area to the healthy part. The brace also helps by keeping the knee joint properly aligned, minimizing further damage. Being more active strengthens the leg muscles and helps to control weight, both of which relieve pressure on the affected parts of the knee and reduce the risk of further damage. Wearing the brace can delay or, in some cases, eliminate the need for surgery.
The brace is constructed from strong, aircraft grade aluminum, and weighs only 21 ounces. It has a contoured inner thigh and calf shell to provide clearance for the other leg. If necessary, the shell can be bent for a better leg fit.
The brace is designed with a patented four-point leverage system that has been clinically proven to increase stability in the knee ligaments, particularly the ACL. Cuffs and straps in four positions serve to rotate the leg bones and place the hinge in the correct position, reducing strain on the knee by directing stress on the knee backwards onto the tibia.
The hinge is easily adjustable (using the provided adjustment key) to increase or decrease the level of support depending on daily requirements. A patented load sensor measures the amount of force being applied at the knee. This can help the wearer comply with medical advice.
Other brace features include flexion and extension stops that can be set to limit the degree of knee movement, swiveling D-rings to help the straps stay in place, floating hinges, and an anti-migration band on the upper calf.
The OAdjuster, which is 14 1/2 inches in length, comes in seven sizes and is available in medial or lateral versions. Choose the medial if your osteoarthritis is on the inner side of your knee, and the lateral if it is on the outside part of your knee.
DonJoy OAdjuster braces are regularly used in fresh and salt water. Rinse the brace with fresh water after use, especially after immersion in salt water, and avoid getting sand into the hinges.
To care for the brace, wash the soft parts by hand with mild detergent, rinse well, and air-dry. Don’t put any part of the brace in the washing machine or dryer. A Teflon-based dry lubricant (like a bicycle chain lubricant) is good for the hinges.
There is a one-year warranty on the frame and hinges, and a six-month warranty on the soft parts.
